Franz vs Wispr Flow

Dictation built into the app you write in all day.

Wispr Flow is a dictation app, and a really good one. Franz is the app you write in all day, and it has dictation built in. Here's how to tell which one you need.

Pick Wispr Flow if

  • You dictate on Windows or your phone too.
  • You want it to learn your words and names.
  • You dictate documents or code all day.
  • Your team needs SSO and shared dictionaries.

Pick Franz if

  • You mostly dictate replies, emails and notes.
  • You want the recognition to run on your Mac.
  • You switch between two languages.
  • You'd rather not add another subscription.

What you might miss

Wispr Flow works on Windows and phones too. It learns your words and names. Paid plans add Command Mode, and teams can share dictionaries or get SSO on Growth. Franz doesn't do those things. Aqua Voice also offers more, with a personal dictionary on Pro and voice commands on Max. If you dictate all day, one of those apps may suit you better.

More about Wispr Flow

Does Franz dictation work on Windows or my phone?

No. Franz dictation needs a Mac with Apple Silicon and macOS 26 or later. If you need Windows or your phone too, look at Wispr Flow or Aqua Voice.

Does my voice go to the cloud?

No. Speech recognition runs on your Mac in every mode. The AI check can send the transcript text to Franz Cloud or the provider for your own API key. It never sends audio. With Ollama on your Mac, or the check off, nothing leaves your Mac.

Can I try dictation before paying?

Yes. The 14-day trial includes dictation. After that, it's part of Franz Pro, Max and Lifetime. Download from meetfranz.com to dictate in other apps too. The Mac App Store version dictates inside Franz only.

Can I keep Wispr Flow and use Franz too?

Yes. Give each app its own dictation key so they don't start together. Franz suggests Right ⌥. macOS dictation listens on fn too. If you use fn for Franz, turn off macOS dictation in System Settings → Keyboard.

Try dictation in Franz

You've got 14 days to try it. Dictation comes with Franz Pro, Max and Lifetime on a Mac with Apple Silicon running macOS 26 or later.
