Franz 6 free plan and grandfathered accounts
Learn why Franz 6 applies current free-plan limits to long-time free users, what still works in Franz 5, and which options are available now.
Back to SupportFranz 6 uses the same free-plan limits for everyone. If your account was created years ago and was previously grandfathered into older free-plan terms, that exception does not carry forward into Franz 6.
This does not mean Franz 5 is being removed from your account. Franz 5 is still distributed, still works, and still receives service recipe updates. When a recipe is updated for Franz 6, the same update flows to Franz 5.
Franz 6 is also not installed through the Franz 5 auto-updater. Moving from Franz 5 to Franz 6 is an active choice. Your account, data, and settings are not deleted when you move.
The main trade-off is the browser engine. Franz 5 uses an older Chromium engine that no longer receives security patches or newer web platform features. Over time, some services may stop loading in Franz 5 when they require a more modern browser engine.
Your options are:
- Stay on Franz 5 for now, with the understanding that the browser engine is aging.
- Use Franz 6 on the free plan, with the current free-plan limits.
- Upgrade to a paid Franz 6 plan if you need more than the free tier includes.
